19. 7) S – Shock/Isolation Resilience
S · Shock/Isolation Resilience = “How long can we run with zero arrivals — and ride shocks — without single-point collapse?” (isolation autonomy & shock absorption)
Shock / Isolation Resilience is endurance made plain. Honest days of autonomy across food, water, energy and spares; traffic-pause rehearsals; dark-Earth weekends; quarantine windows that match incubation, not optimism; asynchronous operations that assume no one is picking up the other end. What moves it is buffers that are counted, not promised, and policy that is implemented in wiring as well as in words. Proof is two Hohmann cycles of operations without unreviewed inputs and a 30-day traffic pause that reads like a payroll calendar. Failure is a patch rolled everywhere at once.
Quick Heuristic: A (Autarky) vs S can be confused. Best analogy: Garden vs pantry. A is the steady local supply at spec. S is the stash that tides you over. Test: Is this produced locally each month (A) or stored (S)?
Cross-pillar ties to S: A provides criticality & time weights (what to buffer, what to substitute). E outage statistics place havens and set cold-chain power baselines. B sets quarantine windows and isolation capacity that operations must respect. G governs lawful no-arrivals and dark-Earth drills; R keeps repair kits reproducible; M fabricates spares; P rosters the night shift that actually runs the drill.
Lessons Learnt: Delete dependencies before you brag about endurance. Endurance measured in days only mattered after we cut single-vendor filters, exotic reagents, shared control planes, and synchronized updates. We switched from mean autonomy to weighted-median days with an Achilles-heel check, then drilled no-arrivals under real constraints. Cold-chain wasn’t a footnote; it was a stealth power plant with its own failure math.
Misjudged Initially:
Medians hid Achilles’ heels; one reagent or gasket set could ruin a quarter’s math.
Buffers spoiled; paper autonomy ignored shelf life and environ drift.
Cold-chain assumed grid reliability; in practice it was a power system.
Synchronous firmware across fleets created hub-wide cliff events.
Qs to Ask:
Show your autonomy waterfall: top-10 items, days, and the Achilles-heel ratio?
How many cold-chain days are guaranteed at spec for meds vs food?
Port Harmonia, Mars (Year 94 Mars Human Era)
Here is an example of Port Harmonia’s Shock Isolation Resilience MIS in the early third century HE:
S=0.35(0.67)+0.10(1.0)+0.25(0.62)+0.10(0.73)+0.15(0.8)+0.05(0.5)≈0.70
Calculations:
Siso Target k=10 ⇒ horizon H = 7800 days.
Siso Weighted median autonomy across items D50 = 5200 d ⇒ Siso = 5200 / 7800 = 0.67
Sweak Weakest of top-10 items Dmin = 2600 d ⇒ Sweak = min(1, 2600 / (0.5⋅5200) ) = 1.0
Sspares Spares: harmonic aggregation ⇒ Sspares=0.62
Shaven Haven: fcover =0.85, fR≥2 = 0.60, divert_score = 0.70 ⇒ Shaven = 0.73
Sops Ops drills: surprise 60-day pass ⇒ Sops = 0.8
Scold Cold-chain: min(D_med, D_food)=3900 d ⇒ Scold = 0.50
Combine (weights sum to 1)
Simplified starting weights for S sub-scores (tuneable, disclosed). Why this split? Isolation days are the anchor; spares depth is the usual failure mode; operations drills prove it’s real; haven coverage reduces single-route catastrophes; balance & cold-chain close common gaps.

Interpretation:
S < 0.40 — Buffers thin; single-point shortages likely; no robust no-arrival drills.
0.40 – 0.70 — Months of autonomy across most items; spares credible; basic haven coverage; drills passing.
> 0.70 — Multi-HC autonomy median; no Achilles heel; strong spares program; repeated drought drills.
