Era 0. Facts – Encyclopedia Galactica

The Red Dawn Era | 2040-2044 | 1-4 HE

TLDR: The Red Dawn era covers the first sustained human sorties to Mars. Multiple small crews live for months at a time in a fragile camp at Port Harmonia, learning how Mars behaves and whether a continuous programme is politically and technically survivable. By the end of HE 4, the architecture has passed its first serious test (storm + equipment failures) without loss of life, and Mars is no longer treated as a one-off stunt.

Main location: Port Harmonia, Arcadia Planitia, Mars(!)

Stage (internal): From S0 “sortie camp” → early S1 base

Population: Peak ~24 at once. Total humans landed < 50 individuals.

Era soundbite: Land, breathe, drink, go home.

Core question: Can we do multiple crews without funerals?

Core result: Land, breathe, drink, go home. Proved life-support and ISRU in the real dust, then left everything tidy for the next team.

Daily feel: Scripted sorties; thin buffers; leave receipts for the next crew. Home for the first ~10 Martians at a time.

Era Challenge: Prove that humans can go to Mars, live and work there, and come back without funerals—long enough that the project isn’t cancelled after the first few flags and photos. It’s about turning a fragile, one-window demonstration into the first link in a continuous chain of human presence, so there is never again a sol when Mars is empty.

Era Accomplishments:  Era 0 was a short-stay, tightly scripted campaign that converted theory into receipts: crewed sorties validate basic ECLSS*, habitat survivability, and first ISRU taps (water/atmosphere handling) under Mars conditions. Nothing here pretends to be “a base.” Ops are expeditionary, buffers are thin, and success is measured in boring checklists, not heroics. The output is evidence: logs, yields, incident reports, and a punch-list for Era 1. *ECLSS = Environmental Control and Life Support System.

Survival Backbone Reliability: Hab keeps people alive through planned short stays; calm ride-throughs for minor faults; black-start sequences rehearsed in sim and micro-scale on-site. Stable air/water loops; power handovers without drama; nuisance alarms trending down as procedures stabilize.

Make–Mend–Multiply: (Local Production & Repair Depth): Field repair is real (swap kits, patching, limited 3D-printed fittings); minimal fab bench turns out Mars-grade parts. Short turnaround on consumables and seals; growing “we can make that here (for now)” list.

Food & Bioprocess Sufficiency: Flown rations primary but safe water processing demonstrated; tiny bioprocess pilot (greens/biomass, sterile handling). Clean potable loop; verified micronutrient plan; contamination checks that actually run.

Mobility, Storage & Logistics Resilience: EVA/rover mobility works in poor conditions; storage tracks days-of-cover for water, air, power; comms/ timebase trustworthy during link wobbles. Simple local autonomy for rovers; labeled buffers; practiced abort/egress paths.

Economic Momentum & Trade Fit: No business yet - ”value is scientific/engineering data, ISRU yields, validated procedures Earth actually wants. External users citing datasets and designs; repeat funding tied to specific, reproducible outputs.

Gov. & Steward: Clear incident command, roles, escalation; decisions logged; simple, testable rules for risk and access. Checklists used (not framed); after-action reviews that change SOPs.

Health, Biosecurity & Care Culture: Pre-/post-mission quarantine, sentinel checks, and waste handling actually followed; near-misses reported without stigma. Timed quarantine windows around biotraffic; clean donning/doffing discipline.

Talent, Training & Team: Small, cross-trained crew; critical tasks have backup operator; sims and drills precede field execution. Skill matrices on the wall; calm handovers; learning captured in playbooks.

Identity, Story & Attraction: Believable narrative: we made X work on Mars for Y hours/days under Z conditions; public demos match the logs. Earned media from real tests; clear naming for sites/tools/procedures; newcomers attracted by mission, not hype.

Allies, Capital & Partnership Readiness: Multiple backers and vendors; MoUs scoped to this stage; term-sheet hygiene avoids hidden lock-ins. Diversified supply; sandboxed standards; graceful “no” to misaligned asks.
