8. Faces of the Frontier
In the years 31–35 HE, when Port Harmonia was about Stage-4 organism of roughly 1,500 souls, I asked the city’s key functional leaders to speak their worlds for posterity — not for release then, but so a later century could see how we actually worked. I was then a simple general ops droid with grease under my data, helping run pads and permits, shops and shelves; I knew their clocks and the cost of missing one.
What follows concentrates on the pioneer functions — the muscles and nerve of Settlement Stages 1 through 5, shading into early 6. The premise was simple: let the person who carries the weight explain the work. In their voices you’ll hear cadence and constraint, windows and buffers, what they owned and what they refused to touch. Structure appears in the way a line is drawn, a risk is priced, a shortcut is declined. Facts and figures anchor each account; character provides the vector.
After Stage 6, when headcount pushed into high thousands and beyond, both roles and rhythms evolved — another story of governance, culture and life for another codex volume. This one stays with the people pioneers and functions that built Mars in the core of the Founding Century.
